What is the AV node's primary function?

Initiates atrial contraction

Conducts impulses rapidly to the ventricles

Delays conduction to allow ventricular filling

The main idea is that the AV node acts as a gatekeeper between the atria and ventricles, slowing the electrical signal to provide a crucial pause. When the atria depolarize, the impulse reaches the AV node and is conducted more slowly, creating a delay long enough for the atria to contract and finish filling the ventricles. This delay ensures optimal ventricular preload and coordinated timing of the heartbeat. After this pause, the impulse travels rapidly through the His-Purkinje system to the ventricles, producing synchronized contraction.

This is different from the roles of other components: the natural pacemaker of the heart is the SA node, which initiates atrial contraction. The AV node does not conduct impulses rapidly to the ventricles; its slower conduction is what creates the delay. And the heart’s pacemaker function isn’t located in the AV node. The AV node’s delay is essential for proper ventricular filling and overall cardiac efficiency.
